On June 27, 2023, the Board of the League of Women Voters of Jefferson County of WV, approved sending the following to the Jefferson County Commission:
On June 1, 2023, the Jefferson County Commission approved by a 3-2 vote an Ordinance Barring Minors from Attending Adult Live Performances. This is a significant action that has drawn widespread community interest. Commissioner Steve Stolipher suggested holding a public hearing before the commission voted on the ordinance. Given the widespread community interest in this proposal, Comr. Stolipher’s request was reasonable and would have given the county commission an opportunity to hear from the public. It was not endorsed by a majority of the commission. The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County strongly supports the rights of community members to be informed of significant governmental actions and educated on their implications. Most importantly the public should be given the opportunity to express their thoughts and concerns to their elected officials. The proposed ordinance was listed on the agenda for “discussion and possible adoption.” The community would have been far better served if the commission simply discussed the ordinance and then scheduled a public hearing to hear from their constituents. Response from Jennifer Krouse, Jefferson County Commissioner to letter received by League of Women Voters of Jefferson County
Ms. Widmyer, Thank you for your interest in the workings of the Commission. Based on the dozens of e-mails I received, as well as the number of public comments at the June 1st meeting, it is evident that the public was adequately informed of this ordinance. Despite concerted attempts to mischaracterize it, it does nothing more than bar minors from obscene performances as defined by the Supreme Court. Only someone with an irredeemably damaged moral compass would be against protecting children from such material. Given that, there was no need to open this up to an extraordinary level of debate.
