About the LWVJC
The League of Women Voters works to encourage informed and active participation in the democratic process through voter registration, education and the promotion of fair, active and open government. The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County, WV neither supports nor opposes candidates but is engaged in local, state, and national issues of importance to our community. The League of Women Voters, a non partisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County was establised in the early 1980s and has remained active on state and national issues such as health care, and local issues such as education, open government, and land use. Our league is proud of its regular programming including meetings with local legislators, school boards and county commissions, as wll as its topical public meetings on issues of importance to the Jefferson County Community.
Candidate Forums
In carrying out our mission of encouraging informed and active participation in government, the League of Women Voters continues to be key sponsors of candidate debates and forums. When dates have been set our Calendar will provide details about upcoming local forums.
Voter Education
Rooted in the movement that secured women the right to vote, the League of Women Voters has always been committed to registering, educating, and turning out voters — and we’re not stopping now. Help the League continue to fight every day for free, fair, and accessible democracy that works for all of its citizens, not the special interests.
Observer Program
The League of Women Voters has been an active champion of openness in government throughout its history. In pursuit of this goal locally, the League of Women Voters of Jefferson County has established an “Observer Program” to monitor the actions of the county government. Local members have volunteered to attend meetings of the County Commission, the Planning Commission, and the Board of Education.

- The League of Women Voters Education Fund conducts voter service and citizen education activities. It is a nonpartisan, non-profit public policy educational organization.
- We encourage citizen participation in the democratic process by providing candidate forums for elected local, state, and national officials.
- We provide breakfast with the state legislators before the legislation convenes and after it dismisses for the summer.
- We register people to vote.
- We study community issues at all government levels in an unbiased manner.
- We enable people to see positive solutions to public policy issues through education.

The League of Women Voters has evolved from a mighty political experiment designed to help 20 million newly enfranchised women vote in 1920, to what it is today: a unique, nonpartisan organization that is a recognized force in molding political leaders, shaping public policy, and promoting informed citizen participation at all levels of government.
